I heard Rev. Gomes preach twice--once at The Riverside Church in New York, also when I was a pastor at Marble Church in New York and he was our guest preacher and I had the chance to share the chancel with him. He was a gentleman, funny, smart, and so, so adept with the Scripture. I like the line I read today that said Gomes was a mash-up of James Earl Jones and John Houseman. Heaven gains another saint; one less to light the way for those of us who labor here.
"Reality will not conform to you. You must invent your own and then conform to it. So I did. I am an authentic and an original. ... I will not allow myself to be known simply as an African American, no more than I would allow myself to be known as gay or conservative. They are all bits and pieces of a work in progress. I am a child of God." (Peter Gomes, to the Boston Globe, 1996)
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith (2 Timothy 4:7).
