Powerful article on Forgiveness in the NYT philosophy column "The Stone" yesterday. Well written piece, but what's even more fascinating and meaningful to me are the reader comments. Read them, I implore you.
Perhaps I shouldn't read too much into the demographic that reads NYT philosophy columns, but the anger of the readers--expressing the futility/inappropriateness of forgiveness--is fascinating.
My own experience working with people on forgiveness issues suggests that there might be no more important "gift" in our lives. Forgiveness is a peculiar & powerful kind of freedom.
But it's a long and complicated road from here... to there.
