I wonder... how did Jesus become Jesus? If he was fully human, did he explore, test, flail, get lost in adolescent sexual angst, love, lose, grow... like all of us do?
We don't know. For me, it's a powerful question. The lack of information in the Gospels leaves some really beautiful room to imagine... and it invites us to think about how we became who we are (or who we are becoming...)... kind of like Chris Moore does in the book "Biff," or like John Prine does in this elegant, funny, searching song.
How did you become you?
I treasure this line of thinking. The duality of Jesus. Fully divine & fully flesh. Opens up all questions. I used to toy with the idea of God just wanting to feel what we feel physically as we experience it, thus sending Himself down in the form of his Son. Jealousy, lust, vices we deal with, Jesus had to feel them too, if we are to believe he was fully human as well as divine right? It makes Jesus more beautiful to me when I can see him like myself.
ReplyDeleteOH, you REALLY don't want to know that!
