You can't make this up.
A group of political conservatives are busy re-writing the Bible. Boneheadely stupid. But, really, so what? Nothing new here.
What's actually exciting is what comes out when people start talking about the glaring hubris of re-writing the Bible. The indignancy, along with the metaphors, comes a-flyin', fast and furious. But careful! When does trying to invalidate someone else's obvious religious stupidity lure you into a misstep more theologically egregious than the first? Perhaps, when, like Elizabeth Scalia, in the (formerly?) reputable magazine for dignified religious conservatives First Things, you compare the Bible to a... well... let her tell you:
You know, I don’t buy tampons that are designed “by women, for women” because I do not believe that a tampon is intrinsically better because of exclusivity. To create a Bible “by conservatives, for conservatives” seems to me to be just as needlessly parochial, and not a little proud and arrogant.
You can't make this up. It's just too good. The spirit of John Wycliffe lives!
wow......speechless
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean when she talked about a Biblical Kotex, she really meant codex?
ReplyDeleteI can't get to the original comment. searched First Things (for Elizabeth Scalia, not for tampons, I admit) and couldn't find the article. help, please.
