Education

$123,987.

That's what this cost estimator said it will run Beth and I to send James to college.

That's just not possible.

I'm seriously thinking home schooling.

Seriously. Yale and a number of other schools are putting a healthy chunk of their courses online. What's the difference between taking a course online and being there in person?

Seriously. I was in a group this week where I was telling my life story and found myself repeating a line I've said before: "I didn't learn anything in my college classes." That's not totally true... but did the little that I did learn of lasting value outweigh the cost of all those classes from which I took nothing?

Education as a holder of social class is inexcusable. Education is for ethical living--that's about it. It doesn't require ivy on the walls.

Let's just see if I have the courage to educate James for life, not just for social status....

  1. My parents said "it's not possible" to the cost estimators when I was young. It was accurate.
