After hearing the phrase "the Joshua Generation" used a lot to describe this moment in history, I tried to tackle what I think it means in a sermon last night.
Joshua, of course, was the Israelite leader who finally led the people into the Promised Land after Moses was denied that honor by God. People suggest that, as a nation, we're coming through the wilderness of slavery and racism, into our own kind of Promised Land. MLK = Moses. Obama = Joshua. The trick is, of course, that the Biblical Joshua is the patron saint of ethnic cleansing. So what does THAT do to an otherwise lovely analogy?
You can listen to the sermon on the WeWo page on iTunes or on the Marble Church Website (if it's not up today, it should be tomorrow... unless it doesn't pass the network censors). I'd welcome comments that are either positive or that tell me I'm full of bunk.
