Working & Resting

Whatever is foreseen in Joy
Must be lived out from day to day
Vision held open in the dark
By our ten thousand days of work.
Harvest will fill the barn; for that
The hand must ache, the face must sweat.

And yet no leaf or grain is filled
By work of ours; the field is tilled
And left to grace. That we may reap,
Great work is done while we’re asleep.

When we work well, a Sabbath mood
Rests on our day, and finds it good.

  1. Wonderful post David!
    Matt. 11:29 and 30 says:
"Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your soouls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
Once again, thanks for the great thought-provoking lines!

Thanks for the great poem. This must be Wendell Berry...Sabbath Poems? Even if it's not, I recommend the collection. We must find some time to get together when you are back in town. Best wishes...Paul
